Mission

The association will encourage farmers and families to be dependent on the product they grow rather than importing them. People throughout the world have a wealth of local knowledge about their natural environment.

This indigenous knowledge has over the century’s sustainable supported food production, environmental application such natural herbicides and pesticides, medicinal uses, fuel, housing needs and a variety of other innovations.

Vision

The young farmers of Sierra Leone in collaboration with other farmers of Africa and the world in general found ir necessary to reaffirm that, a peaceful stable and enabling political, social and economic environment is the essential foundations which will enable rural areas to give adequate priority to food security and poverty eradication.

The young farmers pledge to contribute politically, socially and economically to remedy the growing concern of food insecurity in Sierra Leone. Originally our ancestors were farmers, educationist and politician they worked meticulously and assiduously in promoting the agricultural sectors of the country.

Their great work had led to the establishment of projects and cooperative organisation for the development of Sierra Leone, their days had passed away.

In this millennium it is our task and responsibility to continue to till the land to improve the food security in Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone is considered as the green Athens of Africa combined with good climatic conditions to serve agricultural activities throughout the seasons.

Product like groundnuts, rice, coffee, cocoa and cassava to name a few are famous tropical produce which are in great demand nationally and internationally. Due to the fact that other organisation is promoting the growing of this vegetables or crops, the young farmers of our association will dedicate their agricultural activities in the growing of bio. Organic vegetables or crops like groundnuts, onions, cassava ECT mixed with poultry and cattle rearing to eradicating poverty within the selected rural areas of operation.

If food for all and global reduction of poverty is our aim then, there are more effective, cost efficient, participatory and less risk options, land reform, organic farming, global trade and fair –trade will promote a sustainable program in poverty eradication.

The young farmers of our association and the national farmers of Sierra Leone are seeking assistance from dedicated Sierra Leone living in the Diaspora and international organisations to boost our farming activities in fulfilment of our aims and objective. We welcome partners onboard to help facilitate our activities in the rural areas of operation for a sound and sustainable well integrated agricultural development projects.

At this juncture we present our aims and objective for a healthy sustainable program.

Aims and objectives of the organisation.

1. The organisation aims to work in collaboration with the aims of the World      Food Programme.(WFO).The millennium development goals and other dedicated international organisation working to eradicate poverty in Sierra Leone .

2. To improve the livelihood of people within the areas of operation through agricultural and technical skills for the development of our rural communities

3. To cater for mechanical, manual tools and equipments which will facilitate farming schools, poultry and cattle rearing activities?

4. To facilitate past war reconciliation reintegration and rehabilitation in the rural areas.

5. Develop human skills and capacities through basic education and presentation on job training.

6. Develop a global partnership for development and to promote fair trade.

7. To eradicate rural poverty.

8. To generate employment, income and knowledge and contribute to strengthening the local rural sector.

Agriculture in Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone can be self –sufficient in food production. The young farmer’s initiatives hopes donor country like EU, USA, and Canada will structurally reform Sierra Leone agricultural policy. Indigenous techniques can help some farmers on a day today living, but not on a full scale production for reserve purpose.

To pound one ton or 500kg of rice with a pencil in a mortar will take some amount, I tell you it is a also a painful process although Africans people are considered to be strong they can do it with the hands but it will not be a 24 hours full scale process for food sufficiency.  Planting methods are mostly done with the hands, it time consuming to plant 200 acres of land with the hands although in some cases there is on option.

Mechanical techniques are considered faster and better methods, planting with a tractor and cleaning with a milling machine can contribu to a an increase food production

Sierra Leone was and still a good country in food production, in the early 50’s up to the 70’s the country can boost of abundant food supply. The country also exported certain commodities to other countries there were research station powered with heavy duty machines for fast production to mention is like Rokupr and Tommabom they were once very important in the sector of rice production.

Sierra Leone had suffered an unjust rebel war, conflicts had caused stagnating food production, agricultural lands lies fallow, vegetable production is disrupted, and some people’s limbs had been mutilated. We are grateful to the UN, OAU, ECOWAS to stabilise the war in Sierra Leone and to bring the unpredictable to justice.

The gross domestic product (GDP) depends on the youths, citizens of the country and a handful of Diasporas to make their contribution in rebuilding the agricultural policy as well as security land policy.

We will be delighted with donors countries mentioned if they can help with the restructuring the agricultural policy of Sierra Leone to meet our demands in foods security. Our dedicated young farmers will focus more on achieving staple food vegetable and crops security in local and rural areas.

As for intellectual property right donor countries must press the interest of developing third world countries in promoting food security for all

The EU and USA aid policy should focus more on achieving food security in local areas, the promotion of regional trade in areas where markets are functioning properly. In food aid the point of departure must be that local capacity is strengthened and food is purchased in region allowing no dumping of foreign surplus.

Human Capacity.

For experimentation purpose the organisation will start with the activities of growing five (5) hectare of biological groundnuts and two (2) hectare of biological onions. Mixed cropping, cattle rearing, poultry and piggery will be encouraged for the economic development of the community.

Successful rural economic progress through organic farming, cattle rearing, piggery and poultry development, rest on building additional human and organisational capacity. To have the desired impact these capacities should be developed broadly at all levels, including smallholder’s farmers training and extension workers as well as among researcher and policy makers.

The organisation capacities will include the abilities to design and implement a strategy, erect a learning environment, design appropriate divisions or labour and encouraged collaboration and rural team work inside the organisation and networks.

While focusing on local and international market opportunities, new farming techniques must match or adjust to existing local farming resources.

Techniques suitable for farmers are low in risk and initials cost and require a minimum of investment. Training and education curricula need be developed or adapted to embrace this low- tech approach to agricultural development.

Encouraging the growing and continue productivities of these organic vegetables and animal husbandry will lead to a growing existence of human capital, social and rural economic development.

Human Capital: will be increased through farmer’s field school training sessions that impact management tools, techniques and knowledge on effective village vegetable, poultry and cattle production.

The knowledge and management techniques may transfer into development activities. Mastering the skills of growing, handling, protecting organic crops cattle and chicken rearing empowers poor farmers not only with additional income, but through enhancing their decision –making skills, self-confidence and ability to interact in the community.

Social Capital: will

increase in the participating villages through forming groups that share common knowledge and experience. The farmer field school and development initiatives forge relations with other farming field school groups, rural village’s services provider and local market outlets.

The local farmers groups formed by farmers that share an interest in improving rural organic vegetation, poultry and animal husbandry are often seen as a first step to forming agricultural organisations that can in the long run influence agricultural investment and policy decisions.

Rural economic Development:

will be boosted through organic crop vegetation, poultry and cattle rearing initiatives. The participating farmers can double their income within a year. After deducting the outlay on pest control, housing equipment, management tools, vaccines, medicines and supplementary feeds, a household can take maybe 10 to 20 Euros per annum. Although Sierra Leone is living on half a dollar a day.

The extra income from various communities can increase the rural economic development, as farmers spend their newfound income on children education, health and clothing or invest their capital in further activities and associated technical skills.

The association will brought forward a number of valuable skills for training in formal as well as informal education.

The second phase of the project will be the construction of a technical school for metal, carpentry and joinery skills where children in the primary and secondary school will learn skilful jobs for the future.

Activities of (NVOFA).

Training and Assistance:

will be given by volunteers to members on organic, poultry and cattle techniques, indigenous farming techniques as well as mechanical techniques will be given. Preservation techniques on water, soil conversation, livestock production, tree planting and protection to minimize global warming, post – harvest management and storage will be a priority for sustainable economic development.

Dry season organic techniques will be tried, a method which will allow household members to generate three times more income from dry season gardening than from rain fed crops.

Loan and Credit  Scheme:

will be introduce for tools, machines and farming inputs, seeds, chickens netting and animal traction can provide crucial support to poor farmers helping them to get their production up.

Women’s Micro Credit Fund:

combined with training and support will be introduced. Credit will be given mostly to women a policy that will allow women to set- up their own income generating activities. Such as the production of ginger beer and local Garry from cassava. Such a method will help women contribute additional income to the family budget and are less dependent on their husband

CO-operative Market Initiative:

will be introducing a method that will enable organic farming to bring their produce to a central market or storage for distribution to various agents.

Evaluation and Expected Result.

NVOFA is an exceptional project which will bring tangible and long –term benefits to its participants.

It will show that community ownership, participation and support must underpin all development activities if they are to be sustainable solution to addressing rural community needs.

The initiatives will also help organic farmers to develop its organisational capacity and when external funding ends from international donors the members of NVOFA will be confident that its members will have the capacities and experience to self –reliant in the running of the association.

Biologische landbouw in Newton - Sierra Leone

Healthy Soil

Healthy People

Healthy Vegetable

De stichting NVOFA tracht haar doel te verwezenlijken door het opzetten en ondersteunen van projecten op het gebied van :

Landbouwontwikkeling,

Educatie, Onderwijs, Ambachtsvorming,

Werkgelegenheid, Sport, Kunst

Cultuur en Toerisme.

De stichting NVOFA werkt samen met

“The Young Generation Technical Development Association” en “Nyandehun Youth Community Development Association”.
